Some of the most resonant and memorable phrases of Vatican II come from “Lumen Gentium,” including the description of the church as a mystery and as the people of God and the assertion of a universal call to holiness. The constitution also affirmed “the common priesthood of the faithful” that all the baptized share.

It’s time to talk about Vatican II in new ways. According to a famous quote often attributed to Dorothy Day, “Everybody wants a revolution, but nobody wants to do the dishes.” This may also apply to the reception of Vatican II.

Sixty years ago this week, Pope Paul VI gave the closing address at the last general meeting of the Second Vatican Council. It is a curious address to read today, because it feels confident at times and yet also imbued with a certain recognition that the council had introduced as many new issues as it had resolved.

It is an axiom among church historians that it takes a century for a council to be received, so we are almost two-thirds of the way. That is another way of saying, Vatican II may have ended 60 years ago but it is still a work in progress.
