An Advent Prayer Service

December 17th marks the beginning of the final days of Advent, our last period of preparation for the Coming of Christ. This is a great time to spend in shared prayer - praising Our God and thanking Him for His many blessings - and in particular for sending His Only Son to be our Redeemer.

The following service is suitable for shared prayer among family members, small prayer groups or Bible study groups. We are going to try to spend this time in the presence of Mary, the perfect sign and symbol of our Advent preparation, as reflected through the Annunciation narrative and Mary's prayer the Magnificat.

The service also contains the recitation of the "O Antiphons", which are part of Vespers in the Liturgy of the Hours during this last week before Christmas. These antiphons address Christ with seven titles, based on the Old Testament prophecies. They reflect the Church's prayer that He may come and save His people.
